Mens.....Curls
Who it is for
- A natural hairstyle for those naturally curly, or at least those with a head of seriously wavy hair. Don’t try and fake curls – this is a hairstyle that will work with natural, curly hair only.
- Like most of 2012’s men’s hair trends, it’s going to be cut shorter on the sides and longer on the top. The length will all come down to what suits you best, however.
- If you have tight curls and are after that is something easy to manage, ask your hairdresser to use clipper 1 and chop off your curls really close to the scalp. This would be easier to manage.
- Other option is to keep the length, as this would give each hair strand its curly bend.
- Styling is essential here. Curly hair is most prone to frizzy ends, especially during the summer months. To prevent this, apply a curl controller cream to wet hair and run your fingers through it.
- While other 2012 hairstyles make great use of it, stay away from hardening gels with this particular hairstyle as they’ll solidify and make the curls look brittle.
FOR MEN: Curls are in!
GUYS! who would have ever thought it......Curls are in! Find out more in a new blog to be posted later tonight!

Mens 2012 Hairstyles
Men’s hairstyles may not be as intricate as women’s but they have an appeal which can last longer than women’s fashion hairstyles. This does not mean men’s styles are boring, in fact they are exciting and retrospective but with each style comes an innovation, an ever evolving change within the style itself. A popular style which has seen resurgence in 2012, is the undercut, its set to be THE style of 2012 for men, below I include how to achieve this years undercut, in blogs to follow, I will share other key styles for the men of 2012!
What to ask for.
The first thing you have to ask your hairdresser / stylist / barber / drunk friend with a pair of scissors (actually, insist the latter stays the fuck away from you) is whether it’s going to work for your hair. Yes, we recommend this step for all the hair trends we write about, but a haircut that requires short sides and a long top isn’t going to work for every guy out there. For those whom it is, we’ve again turned to Melbourne stylist Annika Bowen for advice on precisely what you should be asking for.
When it comes to asking for your sides to be cut, you have two main options. The first is to have them cut with scissors over comb. The second is to have the sides cut short with clippers. Annika recommends the latter, with the clippers giving a much better effect – having the clippers on number 2 is preferential for this kind of undercut, however, number 3 will still work for those not wanting to go quite as short.
If you do have a thinner temple akin to the second photo above, you can opt to have the sides trimmed extra short at the front temple area. Specifically you’re after a number 1 cut in front of your ears, with that shortness blended into a number 2 or 3 on the rest of the sides and on the back of your head.
While it has to be left long, you have a few more options when it comes to the top. The key rule to the top is this, however: it has to be long, and more length (within reason) is better.
Unlike most other haircuts for the coming seasons that use clippers, this undercut is one that doesn’t require any blending between the sides and the top. You could, however, opt to have it the top blending with the crown depending on how your hair sits. But in short, take a picture of the style that you prefer when you go to get your haircut.
Final tip: this is a hair cut that’s depends on the sharpness of the outline, so when your hair dresser passes the mirror to the sides and back of your head, double check to see that it is precisely finished, particularly on the back of your neck and around your ears. If it’s not, ask them to touch it up. And if they don’t give you the final once over with a mirror, don’t go back.

Inspired, in part, by the 70s fashion revival but working across most of 2012′s looks, you can read our guide to the bouncy blow dry for a step-by-step tutorial on getting the look and ensuring that you have the optimum bounce in the roots and the soft waves to frame your face.

Women’s rockabilly hair
It’s the one 2012 hairstyle that’s in for both men and women. Emerging first as a men’s hair trend and now as a women’s, the women’s rockabilly hairstyle plays to the country Americana theme running through some of 2012′s fashion. Seldom subtle, but best worn rough and ready as on Proenza Schouler’s catwalk, you can see that style and all the others by following the link to the guide.
